Why Drug & Alcohol Testing?

    Research indicates alcohol and drug use costs Australian workplaces around $6 billion per year in lost productivity and is responsible for up to 15% of workplace injuries. In the last 12 months, 1 in 37 Australian workers have worked under the influence of alcohol and 1 in 9 have worked under the influence of illicit drugs, like methamphetamine or opioids. Around 1 in 22 people drinking alcohol at short-term risky levels have missed at least one day at work due to their alcohol use and one third of Australia workers have experienced negative effects from colleagues use of alcohol. Some industries such as construction, financial services, transport, hospitality and fishing industries. 


    Under Work Health and Safety legislation, employers have a duty to provide a safe workplace. Employees being affected by drugs and alcohol while at work may not be obvious or easy to detect. Pre-employment testing and screening programs may help you to minimise risks associated with drug and alcohol use. Workplace screening is a tool that proactive businesses may use to reduce the likelihood of harm occurring in their workplace and remove the risk of judgment or discrimination. Some high risk industries may require testing to meet their statuary obligations.


    Drug groups tested for include Meth/ Amphetamines, Benzodiazepines, Cocaine and metabolites, Codeine and Morphine, Opiates, Cannabis/ Marijuana (THC)
